Peninsula Postgraduate Medical Education supervises all Postgraduate Medical Specialist Training in the Devon and Cornwall region. The following information details the South West Peninsula Trauma and Orthopaedics Specialty Training Programme.
This programme aims to provide the highest possible quality training in all elements of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. The training programme is 6 years in duration rotating through the following centres:
- Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital,Exeter
- Derriford Hospital,Plymouth
- North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple
- Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro
- Torbay Hospital, Torquay
The placements last for between one and two years at a time. Successful completion of training will lead to a Certificate of Completion of Training and entry onto the General Medical Council specialist register subject to satisfactory progression.
There are some important skills and attributes you require to have a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics. You need to be enthusiastic, hardworking, be a team player and be a good communicator. You will also need to have drive and aptitude for practical skills including good hand-eye co-ordination, dexterity, visual and spatial awareness. Trainee surgeons on the training programme are assessed at 6-12 monthly intervals depending on stage of training and progress throughout the 6 year period.
Orthopaedics is very popular, extremely rewarding and therefore among the most challenging specialities to gain a training post in. In order to succeed in training and gain a consultant post you will need to demonstrate evidence of management and organisational skills, team-working, research papers/publications, evidence of teaching ability and demonstration of satisfactory progress of the required knowledge and skills in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery.
